12-step mini retreat

The 12-Step Mini Retreat began in 1981 and has run continuously to this day.

A young women from Victoria named, Diana, attended a retreat with the Franciscan Friars in Cochrane, Alberta. While she was there, she noticed a retreat for men only that encompassed supper, a discussion on a Step and its accompanying slogan. Upon her return, Diana worked towards establishing the same kind of mini retreat in Victoria. She was directed to Sr. Marguerite at the residence of the Sisters of Saint Ann, Queenswood.

The mini retreat as it is now observed found its form over several years of interested persons trying various formats. Sr. Marguerite and Sr. Pauline were inspired by Diana’s courage, devotion and sincerity and agreed to join her and the other women to make their dreams come true. Over the first few years, various people arranged with the sisters to use a classroom for an occasional retreat. Then a Sister on staff at the Cochrane Retreat House sent Sr. Marguerite the order of the “Twilight Retreats” held there. A small group began coming to Queenswood Centre once a month in the evening, calling the events “Mini” rather than “Twilight” retreats. Very soon the sisters invited those who had arranged the retreat to join them for their evening meal in the sisters’ dining room before the Mini Retreat began. From the beginning an innovation to the Cochrane program was made in response to Diana’s hopes, (1) that both AA/Alanon, and (2) that both women and men would be invited to participate.

The fine opportunities offered today eventually came into an established routine. The diners and those who come later in the evening gather for a discussion on a new Step each month led by a speaker chosen by one of the organizing participants. After a break participants reassemble for meditation led by a meditation guide. The invited speaker then suggests a slogan, accompanying the step, for group discussion.

As Diana became involved in many other responsibilities, her friends took over. Sr. Marguerite, Sr. Pauline and Sr. Debra were always on hand for meditation. From the mid-‘90s on, meditation has been guided by Isobel M, Patricia S, Debra F, Barbara H, Mary Jane W, Sharon M, Bill W and Cheryl M. These guides provide trustworthy varieties of meditations that assist retreat participants to experience many styles in support of their desire to improve their conscious contact with God as they understand God.
